Villages are considered as destination with high tourism potentials in Iran and in some area are top tourism attraction. Villages have complete set of various elements of local life such as land, farm, garden, houses, mosque, shrines, Qanat, Ab Anbars, local market, variety of food, and traditional rites; therefore, they are known as cultural units in a specific geographic and climatic setting.

There is a direct connection between villages and nature. rural life in Iran like all over the world is a life that is in harmony with nature. Climatic variety in Iran has caused different types of villages with different characteristics to come to being all over the country. These cultural units of Iran have different structures based on the environment they were made in. Therefore, jungle villages are different from mountain villages or desert, plain, and coastal villages. There are some number of them that have unique architectural style; they are more popular than the others and attract lots of tourists per year like Abyaneh (Isfahan), Masuleh and Ghale Rudkhan (Gilan), Kandovan (East Azerbaijan), Filband (Mazandaran), Hajij and Paveh (Kermanshah), Huraman and Palangan (Kurdistan), Makhonik (South Khorasan), Maymand (Kerman), and Kharanegh (Yazd).

As tourist destinations, most of these villages have the facility and services needed by the visitors. Some have hotels, but usually they use eco-lodges to provide a unique experience and make the visitors feel how it would be to live in a village. Some of the more known examples of the villages with eco-lodges are Gasemabad (Gilan), Dehno (Kerman), Barzak (Kashan), and Farahzad (Isfahan). It is also possible to stay in some villages of Qeshm Island, as the largest Island in Persian Gulf, such as Khalf, Tabl, Salakh, Noqasheh, and Baseid.
